The Waterkeeper Alliance is an international, grassroots coalition of local watchdog groups that protect the health and sustainability of over 200 of the most important waterways in the world . The local chapter, the Atchafayala Basinkeepers, is charged with looking after the largest swampland in the United States, the delicate 135-mile long distributary that leads the Mississippi River into the Gulf of Mexico. Last year, a group of Acadianain concert promoters organized a one-day music and arts festival celebrating the Basinkeepers’ message of renewability and environmental conservation with a specific focus on halting the destructive and illegal harvesting of Atchafayala’s Cypress tress.
This weekend, the second annual LAfestival returns to downtown Lafayette, bringing some of Louisiana’s rising stars to the Grant Street Dancehall to raise money for and awareness about the challenges facing the Basin. Doom-punk alchemist (and Houma native) Dax Riggs will headline the event, inheriting top billing from GIVERS, who’s showstopping performance at the 2010 LAfestival seemed to come only moments before they took the entire nation by storm. The lineup also includes hometown pyschedelic prog-rockers The Botanist, New Orleans by way of Lafayette dance pop outfit Royal Teeth, and southern roots soul man Eric Lindell.
Doors open at 5pm and advance tickets are currently available for only $8; a small price to pay for a day of music and art that benefits the long term health of one of the most important waterways in the country.
