Live Picks: 07.07.2011 – 07.13.2011

07.07: NASA Space Universe + MC Trachiotomy and the Islets of Langerhans + Interior Decorating – Siberia

07.08: The Local Skank + Brown Improv – 12 Bar

This weekend marks the 5th edition of San Fermin in Nueva Orleans, an adaptation of Pamplona’s annual festival that includes, among other events, the famous “Running of The Bulls”.  The wildly popular local version is an immersive three day bacchanal of Spanish food, wine and culture that reaches its climax on Saturday morning at 8am, as thousands of brave runners are chased through the streets of the CBD and French Quarter not by bulls, but by hundreds of Big Easy Rollergirls adorned in fake horns and brandishing whiffleball bats.

This year, organizers are embracing the pernicious combination of an event with an early call time and a city that does not impose restrictions on the hours of on-premise alcohol sales by throwing an all-night party that starts 12 hours before the firecrackers signal the start of the Encierro.  Providing the soundtrack for what should be a decadent and depraved throwdown are The Local Skank, a four-girls-and-one-guy quintet that specializes in the kind of punky, horny American ska whose third wave invaded the musical landscape in the mid-1990s yet, dreadfully, seemed all but extinct by the time Save Ferris made a cameo in 10 Things I Hate About You.

The Local Skank’s unique appeal is buoyed by their energetic live shows, which normally see the costumed band members taking the opportunity to dance and/or drink with the crowd even as they are dousing the room with thumping bass lines, sharp percussion and bright, nimble horns. Friday night at 12 Bar will also act as both a Homecoming and Going Away Party for the Skank, who have just returned from a month-long swing up and down the East Coast and are getting ready to pack their bags and head West.  Local comedy troupe Brown Improv opens.
