Record Store Day started as a humble attempt to preserve the stability of local music vendors in the face of the digital age, but it has grown exponentially in both popularity and output during its short life thus far. Conceived three years ago to celebrate the role independent record stores all over the world play in “celebrating the art of music”, it has been an arrant success and the 2011 edition looks to be no different. Following in the footsteps of Jesse Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal) and Josh Homme (Queens of The Stone Age), Ozzy Osbourne will be the “Official “Ambassador” of the event, which is supported by bands and musicians all over the country with special releases for the occasion.
On the national side of things, Animal Collective’s Panda Bear is putting out a new full length album, The Flaming Lips have put together a vinyl box set entitled Heady Nuggs: The First 5 Warner Bros. Records 1992 – 2002, and The Beastie Boys have pressed the Make Some Noise 7″ (which includes a remix from the guys in Passion Pit). Special releases by Caribou, Deftones, Fleet Foxes, Phish, Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, Television, Velvet Underground, the Doors, Superchunk, Clouds, and Yeasayer will also find their way to record store shelves this weekend.
