Toro Y Moi + Small Black + Cults + Sun Airway + Cloud Nothings – Saturn Bar

The impetus for the wild mishmash of rising electronica on display at Saturn Bar on Sunday was a perfect storm of bad luck, good fortune, and iffy planning. As we previously reported, New York pop duo Cults – after receiving Pitchfork Media‘s blessing – is embarking on a regional tour that originally included a stop at the Saint on March 13.  They were to be joined by Philadelphia ambient pop outfit Sun Airway and – returning to the scene of last October’s fireball of synthesized rock and roll – Small Black.  At the same time, Columbia, South Carolina’s burgeoning hometown hero Chazwick Bundick d/b/a Toro Y Mo – on the road with the similarly thriving Cloud Nothings – was tentatively booked at Circle Bar for the same night.

Circle Bar remains closed for renovations, but that seems to have less to do with the massive deck shuffling that contributed to this superbill than the fact that Foburg Music Festival, entering its second official year, was scheduled to take place the exact same weekend as both of the aforementioned concerts.

“Why not just combine the shows,” said everybody, including the guys at Deft Jams, Art/Official and Defend New Orleans, who managed to put together an impressive showcase that not just trumps most of the weekend’s Foburg competition but stands to be one of the best indie and/or electronica concerts in New Orleans so far this year.
